World Premiere:
Clarinet Sonata No. 1
For Clarinet and Piano - In Three Movements
Duration: Approx. 17 minutes
Premiered: April 28, 2018 - Columbia, SC
The three movements of this sonata widely contrast in mood. The first is somewhat of a waltz. Somewhat playful, but somewhat agitated. The second movement is a little mysterious in nature, while the third movement is rooted in jazz influences.
This sonata is based on the constant expansion of an [014] set - a motif made up of a half-step, and a minor third. In the first movement, [014] expands from a three pitch set, to a five pitch array, and finally to a nine note scale. In the second movement, a four note motif expands to a hexachord, built on the same half-step, minor third motif. Finally, in the third movement, the motif has created a 12-tone row, made entirely of [014].
